Guitars – an Overview

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient origins that is used in a broad variety of musical ways. It commonly has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, and twelve string guitars as well exist. Guitars are acknowledged as the chief musical instruments in blues, country, flamenco, rock music, and numerous forms of pop.

The guitar is also a solo classical instrument. They might be played acoustically, where the tone is created by oscillation of the strings and regulated by the hollow body, or they may rely on an amplifier that can electronically control tone. Such electric guitars were brought in the 20th century and continue to have a significant influence on fashionable culture.

Traditionally guitars have been built of combination of different woods and strung up with animal intestine, or more lately, with either nylon or steel strings. Guitars are made and fixed by luthiers. Guitars can be divided into two broad categories, acoustic and electric. They can be built to match the requirements of both left and right-handed guitar players.

There are numerous noted subcategories within the acoustic guitar group: classical and flamenco guitars; steel string guitars, which include the flat top or “folk” guitar; twelve string guitars and the arch top guitar. The acoustic group also includes non amplified guitars designed to play in different registers such as the acoustic bass guitar which has a related tuning to that of the electric bass guitar. The electric guitar has usually a solid body but also can be semi-hollow, or hollow, and produce very little sound without amplification.

Although a guitar may be played on its own, there are several accessories employed for holding and playing the guitar such as the Capo; to alter the pitch of open strings. Plectrum or guitar pick; a little piece of hard material which is in general held between the thumb and first digit of the picking hand to “pick” the strings. Slide; depending on the weight preferred and tone wanted, a plastic, glass, ceramic, chrome, brass or steel round bar to produce a glissando effect.
